Calendula–a time honored medicinal flower

Marigold (Calendula officinalis)If you have ever researched or used herbal remedies before, you have probably come across Calendula time and time again as a main ingredient in various salves and balms.  The petals of this flower (commonly known as Pot Marigold or more technically known as Calendula officinalis) have been used medicinally for hundreds of years, and in fact, its use shows up in some of the earliest known medical writings. We love Calendula and you will notice that it has some properties similar to Chamomile.

Pharmacological studies have shown that Calendula has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, and can also help wounds heal more quickly. Interestingly, did you know that Calendula was used to treat wounds on the battlefields during the American Civil War and World War I? That’s one useful flower!

Some of the molecular compounds that are responsible for these wonderful properties are called flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidants that protect cells from the free radicals that can damage them. While Calendula contains a variety of these types of compounds, all of them contain this basic molecular framework:

Our Healing Salve and Baby Balm both utilize Calendula to hydrate, soothe and repair skin. It truly is an amazing flower! It is also a gentle herb and considered safe for even the most delicate types of skin.
